Smith, Lois Irene, Ballet dancer, teacher, choreographer (born on October 8, 1929, at Vancouver B.C.). Smith began her dance training at the B.C. School of Ballet at the age of 10. Her professional career was launched with Theatre Under the Stars in Vancouver and she spent 4 years dancing in musical productions and operettas.

She married dancer David Adams in 1950 and both joined the newly founded National Ballet of Canada in 1951 as principal dancers. Critics praised Smith's beautiful line and stage presence and she became recognized as Canada's first prima ballerina. She stayed with the National Ballet for 18 years, dancing with partners such as Adams, Earl Kraul and Eric Bruhn.

Smith left the National Ballet in 1969 after suffering an injury and founded the Lois Smith Dance School in Toronto-now part of the Performing Arts Program of George Brown University. She retired in 1988 and moved to the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia.
