Edmonton, early 1990s: the making of dance. In so many studios for so many productions, David gave the community and the dancers an opportunity that went beyond.

One afternoon, David was called into the Director's office and told that they "had a problem." They had booked a production of Swan Lake and didn't seem to be able to produce it. Could David possibly choreograph the performance. David looked at them and said, "When do we start?"

Under these circumstances, most choreographers would at least consider renting one or more videos of the production. David had his own videos running through his head, some going back fourty years to his student days at the Sadler's Wells Ballet, others from the countless productions he had danced in.

For the next period of weeks, David took a most fortunate group of students through a process unique in dance studios: the creation of a full-length classical ballet without reference to any source material they could see. It was the turning point of many young careers.
